Michael Pascual ~ Senior Division ~ Website 1199 Words ~ Process Paper 465 Words
Racism is a problem in our society today, and I would like to address that problem. This is the reason why I chose the racially charged 1967 Detroit Riots. Though it may never be this severe as those who have lived through the 1967 Detroit Riots, I have experienced my own form of racism. People always ask me if I eat dog daily or talk about the shape of my eyes, asking me if I could open my eyes because they are very slim. Even though I am over exaggerating my personal encounter with racism, I still want to bring this issue to light. Today’s version of racism has become more violent and political, affecting people on a deeper level, going back to their roots decades ago. For example, Freddie Gray passed away in 2015 after police officers found a pocket knife in his pocket, and arrested him. While he was being detained, officers injured his spinal cord, leading to his death. Once Baltimore citizens heard about this incident, they were infuriated and began to riot because of the racial injustice they constantly experience. They know the police officers were being racists towards Freddie Gray, and it was not because of the pocket knife Freddie Gray had in his pocket, but because of his African-American ethnicity. I conducted my research by using the internet, searching up a Wikipedia page about the 1967 Detroit Riots to find reliable sources that are cited on the internet page, leading me to books, websites, and news articles. Because of this, I now know more about the 1967 Detroit Riots and the racist motives behind it. My topic relates to the National History Day theme, conflict and compromise, because during the 1967 Detroit Riots, 7000 arrests were made, 43 people died, 1400 buildings were damaged, and 1700 were stores robbed. Because the riots lead to so many conflicts, a compromise had to be made. The compromise included minorities being hired and schools becoming integrated, allowing African-Americans to have the same opportunities as Caucasians.
88 percent of African Americans voted for integration while 24 percent of Caucasians also voted for integration. The compromise that was made after the 1967 Detroit Riots impacted history. If it were not for this riot, we would not be able to go to school with Caucasians, still separated by race. The category I chose is website because all I have to do is copy and paste my information onto the website, and cite the sources I got my information from. By choosing this method, I made this paper the best it could be. Other people who want to learn about the 1967 Detroit Riots could possibly look at my website, learn about the event, and hopefully take away something more than a number or basic fact.
